Internship: Devil’s Thrifthouse Coordinator

Timeline

Fall 2023 - Spring 2024

Description

Affiliated program: Green Devils Intern Program

Summary: Managed by student interns, Devil’s Thrifthouse is a student-supplied thrift pop-up aimed at connecting students with themes of circularity and shifting campus culture towards more sustainable consumption paradigms. The internship project involves planning, marketing, and coordinating clothing exchange events on campus.

Goal: Facilitate at least one pop-up Thrifthouse event per semester to educate and engage with the Duke community about the importance of sustainable consumption and how to participate in models of circularity year-round.

Experience and Learning Outcomes: This project was part of the year-long paid Green Devils internship managed by Sustainable Duke. Over the 2023-2024 academic year, the student interns managed the collection of more than 2,000 items and recirculated these items back into the community free of cost to new owners. Hundreds of students were engaged at the pop-up events throughout the year and all of the donations were diverted from the landfill.

Recommendations: For future circularity events, the interns recommend expanding collaboration with QuadX and other residential communities on campus to grow capacity and impact of Devil's Thrifthouse pop-up events. The also suggest further exploring opportunities and solutions for storage space, as that is the most constraining barrier for the project.
