Duke’s 2024 Carbon Offset Portfolio
2024 Portfolio
Duke achieved its goal of carbon neutrality in 2024 following its strategy of focusing on reducing its emissions, investing in renewable energy, and using offsets to address any residual emissions.
Duke retired, or used, 232,000 offsets from four different projects to reach neutrality in 2024. The average cost per offset across Duke’s whole portfolio was $17 per offset. Below is the complete portfolio of offset projects and more details about each project:
Project Developer: Native Energy
Location: United States
Number of offsets: 14,000
Activity: The Rainier Dairy Digester project sources manure from three family farms in Washington state and places it into a sealed digester, where methane from the waste is collected and used to generate electricity.
Developer: Tradewater
Location: U.S.
Number of offsets: 29,000
Activity: Tradwater permanently destroys stockpiled potent refrigerant gasses that otherwise would have leaked out of storage containers and entered the atmosphere.
Developer: Tradewater
Location: Thailand
Number of offsets: 150,000
Activity: Tradwater permanently destroys stockpiled potent refrigerant gasses that otherwise would have leaked out of storage containers and entered the atmosphere.
Developer: 3Degrees
Location: United States
Number of offsets: 39,000
Activity: The Flathead Landfill captures methane emitted by the landfilled waste and runs it through a generator to create electricity that is put back into the local grid.
