The Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) announced Duke University as a finalist for AASHE’s 2023 Campus Sustainability Achievement Award recognizing Duke’s commitment to catalyzing campus-wide climate and sustainability efforts under the Duke Climate Commitment.
The AASHE Sustainability Awards provide global recognition to the individuals and organizations leading the higher education sustainability movement. With the help of volunteer judges, this program raises the visibility of high-impact projects, pioneering research, and student leadership that helps to disseminate innovations and inspire continued progress toward environmental, social, and economic health.
The outstanding individuals and institutions recognized as finalists were selected based on overall impact, innovation, stakeholder involvement, clarity, and other criteria specific to each award category. Winners will be celebrated during a virtual awards ceremony on Thursday, December 7, 2023, at 12:00 PM EST.
“We are excited to be recognized by AASHE for Duke’s continued efforts to lead higher education in climate and sustainability,” said Tavey Capps, Duke’s Executive Director of Climate and Sustainability. “It is amazing to be named a finalist among other stellar colleges and universities who truly are making our world a better place.”
Duke University’s Climate Commitment, which was announced in September 2022, was selected as a finalist for the Campus Sustainability Achievement Award. Duke was chosen due to the Climate Commitment’s broad reaching impact that touches all aspects of the campus including research, education, operations, community partnership, and external engagement. Few higher education institutions have leadership and integration of climate and sustainability across all functions of the university. Therefore Duke is proud to serve as an example for other schools interested in proactively creating impactful, just, and durable climate and sustainability solutions that place society on a path towards a resilient, flourishing world. “The higher education sustainability community continues to show themselves as leaders in the global sustainability movement. This is never more evident than through the many entries received for the AASHE Sustainability Awards,” said Executive Director Meghan Fay Zahniser. “I am proud to recognize the innovation and leadership demonstrated by this year’s finalists.”
