Affiliated programs: Green Devils Intern Program
Summary
The Campus Engagement Communications Green Devil role provided an opportunity for sustainability and communications-oriented students to develop creative agency and social media experience. This was done primarily through creating engaging content for the Office of Climate and Sustainability Instagram account - from infographics, to Instagram reels, to collaborative challenges. The intern's work supported a consistent and engaging social media presence for the Office while also amplifying the many climate and sustainability-oriented initiatives at Duke.
Goals
1) Promote awareness of and engagement with climate and sustainability initiatives, both within and beyond OCS
2) Contribute to a more climate-literate community at Duke through enhanced communication
3) Support a strong and engaging social media presence for the Duke Office of Climate and Sustainability.
Experience and Learning Outcomes
This project was part of the year-long, paid Green Devils Internship program managed by the Office of Climate and Sustainability. As a result of this position, the student intern developed critical time management skills to balance professional duties with academic responsibilities effectively. A central component of the role involved mastering graphic design platforms, particularly Canva, which occupied a significant portion of the intern's daily workflow. Beyond technical content creation, the intern cultivated a deep understanding of campus activities by actively tracking local events and translating them into digestible, engaging materials designed to promote climate literacy. Overall, the internship provided valuable hands-on experience in time management, creative content strategy, and expanding awareness of climate and sustainability initiatives across campus.
Recommendations
To maximize engagement, the team recommends expanding communications beyond Instagram by incorporating diverse channels, such as a weekly newsletter featuring campus-wide climate events, policy spotlights, and off-campus sustainability news.
