Reducing Duke's Air Travel Emissions
Timeline
Spring 2020 - Spring 2020
Description
Air travel has been a well-established component of academic and student functions at many universities. However, this does not come without financial and environmental costs. Finding ways to both reduce Duke’s reliance on air travel and the funding of offsets to simultaneously decrease expenses and Duke’s impact on the environment. Our project's goals were:
1. Investigate attitudes towards air travel in the Duke community.
2. Find ways to motivate Duke faculty and staff as well as students to rely less on air travel.
3. Identify opportunities to offset carbon emissions produced by air travel.
Through thematic coding of surveys, analysis of air travel spending datasets, and benchmarking research from peer institutions, we developed recommendations for Sustainable Duke and the Duke Carbon Offsets Initiative.
