Redesigning the Grainger Hall Orchard
Timeline
Fall 2017 - Fall 2017
Description
The Grainger Hall orchard was designed by a hired architect and was intended to serve as an edible orchard planted with native varieties of fig, plum, and pear trees. The space also provides a unique area for the Nicholas School community to gather and socialize. However, the orchard faces challenges due to unfavorable soil conditions and general maintenance issues. The orchard space could be used in a more sustainable way by
correcting the soil issues and increasing maintenance. Additionally, increasing the number of amenities in the orchard could increase the Nicholas School community’s regular use of the space.
