The mission of the Duke Carbon Offsets Initiative (DCOI) is to help Duke University achieve its commitment to carbon neutrality by 2024. DCOI also seeks to effect environmental change at the local, state, regional and national levels. In pursuit of these goals, DCOI is interested in working with North Carolina swine farmers to develop carbon offset projects.

Despite contributing only a small portion of total campus greenhouse gas emissions (GHG), Duke University’s Police fleet serves as a visible platform for demonstrating progress toward the University’s commitment to be carbon neutral by 2024. However, before the fleet can be modernized, adequate vehicle replacements are needed.

In 2007, Duke University signed the American College & University Presidents’ Climate Commitment, committing the University to develop an institutional plan to achieve carbon neutrality by 2024. Achieving this goal will require Duke University to offset approximately 183,000 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) in 2024.

The Duke Occupational and Environmental Safety Office (OESO) supports the university-wide efforts to manage safety and environmental programs in education, healthcare delivery, medical teaching and research. While the organization focuses on health and safety issues, it also extends its reach to those projects that will further the institutionalization of sustainability at Duke University.
