This project team took on the problem of food insecurity among Durham’s Latinx residents, one in five of whom said they sometimes skipped or limited their meals. In the context of the pandemic, access to sufficient nutritious food took on even greater importance.

This Bass Connections project brought together an interdisciplinary team of innovators and educators to optimize the Ignite curriculum for implementation in the Durham Public Schools system. Ignite promotes active mentorship, catalyzes collaboration and fosters global awareness and citizenship.

In concert with the North Carolina Lead and Healthy Homes Task Force, this Bass Connections project produced the first city soil-lead map in the state. These maps served as tools to identify lead hotspots and guide management of aging construction and new developments.

An aggregate power signal (such as the one read by building utility meters) may be decomposed into its constituent devices such as refrigerators, computers, televisions, etc. This project team designed and implemented an energy disaggregation system to establish Duke University as a learning laboratory for energy consumptive behavior and smart meter potential.

This project team developed and implemented communication strategies with partners at Clean Energy Durham. Areas of focus included energy education in the public housing and low-income housing sector; community-building and energy efficiency; and connections between water and energy efficiency.
