Since President Brodhead signed the American College & University President’s Climate Commitment in 2007, Duke University has committed to achieve carbon neutrality by 2024. After developing a Climate Action Plan to achieve this goal, the Campus Sustainability Committee (CSC) chose to move beyond greenhouse gas emissions and work on larger campus sustainability issues.

The goal of this study was to create a guide that aids individuals and institutions develop educational programs about sustainability for their farms. Interest in such programs is increasing and relatively few guides are available. The Duke Campus Farm is the intended first audience.

This study was conducted in order to inform the sustainability planning process at Duke University and similar institutions of higher education. Through interviews of Duke University Campus Sustainability Committee members and a cost-benefit  analysis  of  Duke’s  Climate  Action  Plan,  we  evaluated  the   effectiveness  of  Duke’s  sustainability  planning  and  implementation  process.
