Bleed Blue, Teach Green with the Green Classroom Certification, which provides faculty opportunities to incorporate sustainability in the classroom and to educate students on the importance sustainable behaviors and practices here at Duke.
What is a Green Classroom?
There are a number of different strategies to create a sustainable classroom for your students.
- Reduce paper use while offsetting your online carbon footprint.
- Reduce energy use in the classroom by utilizing natural sunlight and turning off equipment when not in use.
- Reduce travel emissions by tele-conferencing experts and lecturers.
- Incorporate sustainability in your coursework.
- There are a number of ways sustainability applies to different topics taught at Duke.
What is Green Classroom Certification?
Prior to the start of your course, complete the checklist which provides you with the opportunities to green your classroom. Certification is awarded based on the completion of 26 out of 33 items on this checklist.
- If an item does not apply to your course, you should not check that item off, but leave a note in the comment box at the end of the section.
- Faculty must apply for certification for each course individually, unless two courses meet the same criteria, and must reapply each semester.
- Faculty are able to access, make updates, and resubmit their applications for courses taught previously in order to reduce administrative burden.
Why should you complete Green Classroom Certification?
Faculty who certify their courses will receive a logo and description of the program to include in their syllabus and promote their certification (i.e. on their course website or e-mail signature). In addition, they receive recognition on the Sustainable Duke website and featured by other Duke Media outlets.
