Description: 

Duke University utilizes on and offsite data centers in order to meet computing and storage needs. Cloud computing is an essential part of University operations and creates a significant amount of greenhouse gas emissions due to the electricity and cooling needs of data centers. Our team had the task of determining the current environmental impact of data centers in addition to the steps that can be taken to increase efficiency. Duke currently runs a small portion of cloud computing through Microsoft Azure data centers which are run at a higher efficiency than smaller scale onsite data centers. Recommendations for increased use of Azure services and ways to make Duke data centers more sustainable were provided to clients at Duke Library.
