Climate and sustainability are infused into Duke's operational, educational, research, and engagement missions. Duke's climate and sustainability journey has grown from 2004's signing of the Environmental Policy to developing its first climate action plan in 2009 to the launch of the Climate Commitment in 2022.
Climate Commitment
Fall 2022 marked the launch of Duke University’s Climate Commitment, which is a university-wide, impact-oriented initiative to address the climate crisis by creating sustainable and equitable solutions that place society on the path towards a resilient, flourishing, carbon-neutral world. The Climate Commitment builds upon the strong foundations of climate and sustainability efforts that have been infused throughout campus operations, academics, research, and engagement with the local community and other external entities. In spring 2024, the Climate Commitment Advisory Council (CCAC) was formed and tasked with developing strategies and goals for each aspect of the commitment. 2030 Strategy Executive summary
September 2025 marked the third anniversary of the Duke Climate Commitment and the announcement of the Three-Year Plan (2025–2028) -- the plan towards the 2030 Strategy. This three-year plan reflects years of dialogue and collaboration since the launch of the Duke Climate Commitment in September 2022. It builds on the strengths of many people and partners, igniting efforts in education, research, external engagement, operations and community partnerships.
