Community Gardens Growing On Campus
|
Two community garden groups at Duke are seeing green this week. The Duke Community Garden, located beside the Smart Home off Faber Street, has installed six raised beds in the past few weeks. The collaborative project brings together student volunteers from diverse academic interests and student organizations across campus to promote sustainable, small-scale farming and to provide a place for students to get together and grow. The project received funding from the Sustainable Duke Green Grant Fund, and has been working on a tool-shed that would collect rainwater for the garden from the roof.
Just half a mile west of the Duke Community Garden, on the northeast corner of the Sarah P. Duke Gardens is the second community garden at Duke. The Honey Patch, so named for the bee boxes maintained by Duke's Apiary Club, was unveiled on Martin Luther King Day in January. Run by a group of Nicholas School graduate students, the garden offers another place for gardening enthusiasts to come together and grow. The Honey Patch also received funding through the Green Grant Fund, and is a collaboration between the Sarah P. Duke Gardens and Facilities Management Department.
