Compost Surplus Days

WHEN: April 11, 8AM-12PM

Gate 12, Duke Forest

Duke collects materials from the campus grounds and composts on site in the Duke Forest. During Earth Month, surplus from this site will be shared with the community. Whether you have a car or truck, come out and get some compost!  For those of you bringing your truck there will be a loader on site. [contact event coordinator]


Garbology

WHEN: TBD
WHERE: Main Quad West Campus

Garbologies are an interactive way to highlight what types of materials are recyclable on our campus and show how well a specific building is recycling. This year we'll be removing a days worth of trash from the outdoor trash cans on West Campus.  We'll sort this material and compare waste from the academic and residential sides of the quad. All the sorted material will be weighed to determine how much of the trash could have been recycled.

Environmental Markets Symposium Series: Carbon Offsets [site]

WHEN: April 10-11th, 2009
WHERE: French Family Science Center

A series of panels focused on specific types of carbon offsets in the marketplace—Forestry, Energy Efficiency Certificates (EECs), Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs), and Methane Capture—will attempt to shed some light on the specific issues regarding methodologies, policies, and business planning by drawing on the expertise of professionals within the policy, industry, and certification arenas.

We're hitting the graduate and professional schools during Earth Month to find anyone who hasn't signed the Sustainable Duke Pledge. Anyone who hasn't already received a bag can bring their Duke Unique ID to one of our four events this week to pick up their bag right there! We'll also be kicking off the Smart Commute Challenge at Duke, a great way to start your pledge.


Duke-Durham Local Climate Action Forum

WHEN: April 16th, 5:30 - 7PM
WHERE: Nasher Museum of Art

As part of its commitment to become a climate-neutral campus, Duke has been developing plans and recommendations that include strategies, milestones and timelines to reduce the university's greenhouse gas emissions. Join campus and community leaders in a discussion about Duke’s draft Climate Action Plan and how the university’s efforts can compliment Durham’s Greenhouse Gas Local Action Plan.

Duke LEAF Award & Reception Event with Robert Redford

WHEN: April 18, 2009, 2:30 - 4 p.m.
WHERE: Page Auditorium

Actor, director and environmentalist Robert Redford will receive the inaugural Duke LEAF Award, for lifetime environmental achievement in the fine arts.  More information on the event is available from the Nicholas School of the Environment.

Duke Tree Campus USAArbor Day Tree Planting

WHEN: April 21st, 10AM - 2PM
WHERE: East Campus Gazebo / Bandstand

Duke staff, administration and students are invited to join the Duke Tree Campus Committee in planting 25 trees on Duke's campus. The trees are expected to sequester an average of 200 lbs of CO2 each year. The event concludes with an award ceremony, recognizing Duke's efforts to become the first tree campus USA in North Carolina.


 Last Day of Classes (LDOC) Goes Green! [site]

 Since LDOC falls on Earth Day this year, sustainability will be a running theme behind the day’s events. LDOC organizers hope to find creative ways to offset the event’s carbon footprint (i.e. electricity used to run the outdoor stage), to encourage campus-wide recycling, and to utilize green materials in an effort to minimize the event's environmental impact.


 Live For Life's "Be a Locavore" Event

 The Duke Farmers Market celebrates its ninth season supporting the farm-to-fork movement with this year's "Be a Locavore" theme. All Duke employees are invited to visit the market regularly so that they can purchase and eat fresh fruits and vegetables while supporting local agriculture.

"Go Green" to this year’s celebration to enjoy great food and live music on the CCB Plaza. There will also be hands-on green activities and demos, the annual Earth Day Parade, and information on green practices and products at the Sustainability Expo and Earth Art Market.
