Historic Steam Plant Wins Gold LEED Rating

The renovated steam plant on East Campus has received a gold LEED certification rating from the United States Green Building Council. The 85-year-old steam plant received LEED recognition – Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design – for sustainable construction practices during restoration and for its performance. Natural gas – not coal – fuels 15 new boilers.

Three Zipcar Vehicles Added to Campus Fleet
February 14, 2011
With slightly more than 900 members of the Duke community using the Zipcar service, three cars have been added to the campus fleet, bringing to 11 the total cars available for reservation by the hour or day. Of the three vehicles, one Nissan Sentra and a Honda Insight hybrid will be kept at the Eye Center Lot and one Sentra will be found on Central Campus, outside the Devil’s Bistro.

Awards Showered on $26M Duke Steam Plant Project

The $26 million restoration of Duke University’s East Campus steam plant building, which reopened last year, has so far garnered the university and its contractors nine awards from architecture, builder and business groups for the project’s sustainability features and historical restoration. The steam plant building, which dates back to the late 1920s and was largely unused for 30 years, has been converted into a natural gas-fueled steam production plant to supply more energy to the university’s East Campus and medical center buildings.

Duke's Zipcar fleet recently increased and now features eight vehicles at four locations on Duke's East and West campuses. Students can uses Zipcar instead of bringing a car to campus and the car-sharing program offers a way for faculty and staff to get off campus at a moment's notice without having their own car around.

North Carolina's Two Dukes Collaborate on Greener Hog Production

Near Yadkinville, about 100 miles west of Durham, the university is partnering with Duke Energy on a pilot system for managing hog waste in a way that controls greenhouse gas emissions, creates carbon offsets and generates renewable energy. The system will meet stringent environmental performance standards for the control of pollutants from animal waste management systems.

The Duke Carbon Offsets Initiative is off to a good start—the first carbon capture project is scheduled to break ground within the month. February Green Devil Challenge: Take the Duke Carbon Calculator

On Tuesday, Duke issued its second Green Devil Challenge to encouraging students, faculty and staff to take the Duke Carbon Calculator to determine how much carbon they produce at the university. Using the calculator, individuals can answer a series of questions to see how much carbon they emit while eating, traveling, working, studying or living on campus. Individuals receive a “Carbon Report Card” that includes overall emission results and a breakdown by category.

Duke to Centralize Computer Purchasing for Cost and Environmental Benefits

As part of the Duke Administrative Reform Team, a new standard process has been developed for the purchase of computers. The Duke Computer Purchasing Program was developed to take advantage of volume purchasing through our preferred vendors: Dell, Lenovo and Apple. These companies assisted Duke in reconfiguring some of the standards to include products with a higher level energy efficiency that will save Duke money in the long run, as well as reduce greenhouse gas emissions from energy consumption over the life of the computer.

Grassroots Green: Reducing Our Emissions From the Ground Up

In announcing Duke's plan to become climate neutral by 2024, President Richard Brodhead called on Duke community members. The university produces about 300,000 metric tons of carbon emissions annually. While significant reductions will be achieved through institutional changes like converting from coal to natural gas, a large percentage will fall to the decisions and behaviors of people who work, study and live at Duke.

Take the Green Devil Challenge

In an effort to encourage students, faculty and staff to take specific actions to help reduce their greenhouse gas emissions on campus, Duke has introduced the Green Devil Challenge. Each month, a new challenge will be issued to encourage individuals to make small changes in their daily lives that will help reduce emissions at Duke. The first challenge, issued by an email from Bill Chameides, asks people to begin by making a commitment by signing the Sustainable Duke Pledge or asking a friend or colleague to do so.

Colleges Go Carbon Neutral

Recently, Duke University joined more than 600 universities in releasing its Climate Action Plan, a comprehensive blueprint that includes a target date and interim milestones for achieving carbon neutrality. Duke's efforts are part of the American College & University Presidents' Climate Commitment, an effort to address global warming formed in December 2006 by the presidents of 12 universities. Duke has set its goal for 2024, the 100th anniversary of James B. Duke's Indenture of Trust that established the institution.

New cost-saving policy will affect workplace temperatures

As part of ongoing administrative reform efforts to reduce expenses, Duke has adopted a new policy for building temperatures during regular and off-hours in university buildings on the central control system. The new policy will also discontinue the use of portable space heaters by employees at work. In all, the plan is expected to save Duke more than $600,000 a year.

New Era for Steam at Duke

Duke's East Campus steam plant is scheduled to reopen in January after a $25 million renovation that marks another era at Duke: natural gas – not coal – will fuel the new boilers. The system will provide 35 percent more steam to heat academic and medical buildings, sterilize surgical equipment and maintain proper humidity for art and lab research.

Annual Eco-Olympics fosters green living

As Cameron Crazies paint themselves Duke blue for basketball season, freshmen are also embracing another color—green. Through October, freshmen can engage in the Eco-Olympics, a waste and energy reduction competition between East Campus dormitories. Hosted by the Environmental Alliance, the Eco-Olympics comprise a series of events that educate students about sustainable living. “Because they are freshmen, we can get them involved with saving energy and learning about environmental issues facing the world very early on,” said EA co-President Ben Soltoff, a sophomore. “We introduce them to practices that they can keep doing throughout the rest of their four years at Duke.”

Duke Plans To Become "Climate Neutral" By 2024

Duke University has released a plan to become climate neutral by 2024, which coincides with the 100th anniversary of James B. Duke signing the indenture of trust that established the institution. The university developed the plan as part of the American College & University Presidents’ Climate Commitment, which President Richard H. Brodhead signed in 2007. Earlier this month, Duke’s Board of Trustees reviewed and endorsed the goal of achieving climate neutrality.
